Des Arc, Mo. (KFMO) - A destructive tornado struck the small town of Des Arc in Iron County on Friday night, leveling homes and leaving the community in shock. The storm, which touched down just after 11 p.m., packed winds exceeding 130 mph, causing widespread destruction. National Weather Service crews worked Sunday to determine the exact starting point of the track of the tornado, with surveying likely to take a while to complete.
At least 150 homes and businesses were damaged or completely flattened, with entire neighborhoods left unrecognizable. Emergency responders worked through the night, conducting search and rescue efforts to locate anyone trapped in the debris. There were 4 reported injuries, one significant. The NWS says that the tornado was at least an EF-3, at minimum.
Many residents have been displaced, with shelters opening in nearby towns to house those left without a home.
Missouri State Highway Patrol and National Guard units have been deployed to assist in relief efforts, providing food, water, and emergency medical aid. The storm also left thousands without power, as high winds downed power lines across the region.
Fire departments from surrounding communities, including Pilot Knob and Annapolis, responded to assist with rescues and damage assessment. The main roads leading into Des Arc were littered with debris, making access difficult for emergency responders.
Local churches and community groups have begun organizing donation drives to help affected families.
Governor Mike Kehoe has promised state assistance for Des Arc and surrounding areas, calling the destruction “heartbreaking.” Damage assessments will continue in the coming days as emergency management officials determine the full impact of the storm.
