Festus Man Charged with Two Felonies After Selling Stolen Gun

Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - A Festus man is facing two felony charges after reportedly selling a stolen firearm, court documents reveal. 40-year-old Jason K. Chatfield, a persistent offender, and was on probation at the time of the incident.

The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Chatfield on September 25 with unlawful possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property, both Class D felonies that could carry up to seven years in prison. As of October 7, he remains in the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro without bond.

According to a probable cause statement, Chatfield allegedly sold a Kimber gun for $400 at a local business on July 13. The buyer later discovered the firearm was stolen and contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

At the time of the alleged sale, Chatfield was on a five-year probation term following a guilty plea to multiple felony charges, including stealing, possession of a controlled substance, and property damage. He had previously served a 120-day shock incarceration sentence and was placed on probation in June 2023.

Chatfield’s criminal history includes multiple guilty pleas to felony charges dating back to 2021, including theft of catalytic converters and property damage. He was also sentenced to seven years in prison earlier this year for stealing but was placed on probation instead.
