St. Louis, Mo. (KFMO) - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s (SLMPD) Force Investigative Unit is investigating a deadly use-of-force incident involving a Leadington Police officer. The shooting occurred early Wednesday morning outside The Wheelhouse, located at 1000 Spruce Street in St. Louis.
Around 2:50 a.m., SLMPD received an “Officer in Need of Aid” call from the area. Shortly after, reports of a shooting were also made. Preliminary investigations indicate that multiple officers from various jurisdictions were working secondary security at The Wheelhouse when a large fight erupted outside the establishment.
Amid attempts to disperse the altercation, at least one officer deployed pepper spray. During the confrontation, a 25-year-old man reportedly drew a firearm. A Leadington Police officer ordered the man to drop his weapon. When the suspect failed to comply, the officer shot him.
The armed individual was transported to the hospital, where he later died. His firearm was recovered at the scene.
Following the incident, a 26-year-old man reported to a nearby hospital with a bullet graze wound sustained during the altercation. His injuries were non-life-threatening.
The Force Investigative Unit, tasked with examining all uses of deadly force by law enforcement within St. Louis, is leading the investigation. The name of the Leadington Police officer involved has not yet been released.
