Long House Designated as Site on Trail of Tears Historic Trail

Farmington, Mo. (KFMO) - The Long House in Farmington has been designated by the National Park Service as a historic site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

The house, built in 1833 and located at what is now 400 Sainte Genevieve Avenue, is the oldest house in Farmington. Angelica Sanchez-Clark, Parterships and Outreach Coordinator with the National Trails Office, says potential historic sites first apply to be recognized, then enter into a partnership with the National Trail System.

In the 1830s, more than 16,000 Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their homes and forced to walk hundreds of miles into what is today Oklahoma. The path they walked is today known as the Trail of Tears.
