Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - As the new year approaches, Missouri residents should be aware of several significant legal changes taking effect on January 1, 2025.
Siddens-Bening Hands-Free Law Enforcement Begins
The Siddens-Bening Hands-Free Law, enacted in 2023 with an initial grace period, will now be fully enforced. Starting January 1, drivers caught holding their phones while operating a vehicle can face fines. Penalties include up to a $150 fine for a first offense, up to $250 for a second offense, and up to $500 for subsequent offenses within a two-year period. Violations in school or work zones may result in fines up to $500. More severe penalties apply if the violation leads to serious injury or fatal accidents.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Dallas Thompson expressed optimism that this law will reduce accidents on roadways.
Minimum Wage Increase
In accordance with Proposition A, Missouri's minimum wage will increase from $12.30 to $13.75 per hour, effective January 1, 2025. This adjustment is part of a planned progression to reach $15 per hour by 2026. The increase is expected to benefit nearly half a million workers across the state.
Expanded Expungement Opportunities
Changes to Missouri's expungement laws will also take effect on January 1. Previously, individuals could seek the removal of up to two misdemeanors and one felony from their public records. The new provisions allow for the expungement of up to three misdemeanors and two felonies, enabling more residents to clear their records and pursue new opportunities.
These legal updates reflect Missouri's ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, improve economic conditions for workers, and provide avenues for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
