Missouri Observes Severe Weather Preparedness Week This Week

Weldon Spring, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri is set to observe Severe Weather Preparedness Week this week, aiming to enhance public awareness and readiness for severe weather events. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the National Weather Service (NWS), the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local emergency managers.

Each day of the week will focus on a specific aspect of severe weather safety:

  • Monday, March 3: Receiving Weather Information
  • Tuesday, March 4: Flooding Safety
  • Wednesday, March 5: Tornado Safety
  • Thursday, March 6: Hail/Wind Safety
  • Friday, March 7: Lightning Safety

A key event during the week is the annual statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, at 11 a.m. At this time, NOAA Weather Radios set to receive Routine Weekly Tests will alert listeners, and outdoor warning sirens will sound across participating communities. Residents, schools, and businesses are encouraged to practice seeking shelter in designated safe areas to ensure preparedness for actual tornado events.

The importance of this preparedness week is underscored by recent severe weather incidents. In November 2024, multiple rounds of severe storms and heavy rain resulted in rapid flooding and seven fatalities in Missouri. These events highlight the necessity for year-round awareness and preparedness for severe weather.

SEMA Director Jim Remillard emphasizes the need for proactive measures: “Although many associate severe weather season with the spring and summer months, the reality is that deadly storms, flooding, and tornadoes can occur at any time of year. This is why it’s incredibly important to learn about the risks and prepare before severe weather strikes. Take time to understand the different hazards, have an emergency plan in place, and review the steps you’ll take to stay safe.”

Missourians are advised to have multiple methods of receiving weather alerts, create family emergency plans that include pets, and know the safest shelter locations at home, work, or school. More information and resources are available at stormaware.mo.gov

By actively participating in Severe Weather Preparedness Week, residents can significantly improve their readiness and resilience against severe weather threats.
