Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri Department of Transportation is urging residents to take precautions as a significant winter storm approaches the region this weekend.
During a press conference Thursday morning, MoDOT's top engineers described the storm as potentially the largest to hit the area in recent years. Officials are particularly concerned about the variety of precipitation expected, including snow, ice, and freezing rain, which could create hazardous conditions on roadways and hinder cleanup efforts.
MoDOT is advising residents to stay off the roads on Sunday and possibly Monday, particularly if remote work or other at-home options are available.
“This storm has the potential to make travel extremely dangerous,” said a MoDOT representative. “Our crews will be working around the clock, but conditions may remain treacherous, and safety is our top priority.”
Ahead of the storm, residents are encouraged to prepare for possible power outages and travel disruptions. Essential supplies such as food, water, and medications should be stocked, and vehicles should be equipped with emergency kits containing blankets, flashlights, and other necessities.
MoDOT will continue to provide updates through its Traveler Information Map. For the latest information, visit modot.org.
