Safety Should Be Top Priority This Labor Day Weekend, Says Missouri State Highway Patrol

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - As the 2024 Labor Day weekend approaches, Colonel Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is urging all Missourians to prioritize safety on the water and on the road. The holiday weekend, which runs from 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2, will see increased traffic and boating activity across the state.

On the Water: Boating Safety Tips

The Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest times for boating, and the Patrol is reminding boaters to stay vigilant. “Whether you are on the water or on the road, it’s everyone's responsibility to travel safely and observe all Missouri laws,” Colonel Olson said.

Boaters are advised to conduct safety checks before setting out, including inspecting fuel lines for leaks, ensuring the battery is charged, and checking for potential fire hazards when refueling. Alcohol should be consumed responsibly, and operators are warned against boating under the influence, as alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, especially when combined with boating stressors such as sun, wind, and vibration.

In 2023, there were 12 boating crashes during the Labor Day weekend, resulting in three injuries but no fatalities. Ten individuals were arrested for boating while intoxicated. This year, marine enforcement troopers will be out in full force to ensure safety on Missouri’s waterways.

On the Roads: Drive Safely and Sober

The roads are no less hazardous during the holiday weekend. Last year, Missouri saw 1,058 traffic crashes over Labor Day, resulting in 15 fatalities and 477 injuries—equivalent to one person being killed or injured every 9.5 minutes. Impaired driving remains a significant issue, with 125 arrests for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday.

Corporal Dallas Thompson emphasized the importance of vigilance.

The Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort), deploying all available troopers to enforce speed limits, seat belt use, and impaired driving laws.

Safety First: Plan Ahead and Stay Alert

Missouri drivers and boaters are urged to plan ahead, avoid distractions, and remain alert for others around them. Smaller vessels should yield to larger boats, and vehicle drivers should obey all traffic signals and speed limits. The Patrol reminds everyone that life jackets save lives and should be worn whenever on or near the water.

By following these safety tips, Missourians can help ensure a safer Labor Day weekend for everyone.
