Perryville, Mo. (KFMO) - A powerful tornado tore through Perryville late Friday night, leaving a path of destruction across the city and causing significant damage to local schools, businesses, and homes.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down at approximately 11:41 p.m. on March 14, 2025, and followed a path through the Perry County School District #32 campus before crossing U.S. 61 and continuing into rural areas of Perry County. Wind speeds were estimated at over 140 mph, making this a strong EF3 tornado.
Several buildings on the school campus sustained severe damage, including a partial wall collapse on the west side of Perryville High School. Debris from the storm was scattered across the district, and officials have closed the campus to assess structural integrity and begin cleanup efforts.
Perryville police and emergency responders spent the early hours of Saturday assessing the damage, clearing roadways, and ensuring public safety. Several major streets were impassable due to fallen trees and power lines. In addition to the school damage, multiple homes and businesses suffered major structural failures.
Local officials urged residents to avoid travel through affected areas as emergency crews worked to restore power and clear debris. No fatalities have been reported in Perryville.
State emergency management teams have arrived to assist with recovery efforts. Governor Mike Kehoe issued a disaster declaration for Perry County on Saturday morning, which will allow state resources to aid in debris removal and rebuilding efforts.
