What is St. Elmo's Fire

(St. Francois County, MO) We've heard of St. Elmo's Fire but what is it? The Old Farmer's Almanac's, Dan Holiday, says it was 206 years ago this month when a remarkable display of St. Elmo's Fire occurred in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Holiday adds the blueish glow is actually shimmering plasma created by ionization of molecules in the electric field around objects. The phenomenon is named after the patron Saint of Sailors who believed it to be a good omen for sea going vessels. You can hear the Old Farmer's Almanac Report on AM 1240, KFMO.
