Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The Parkland remains under Winter Storm Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings as a major winter storm is set to impact the region from late Saturday night through early Monday morning. Significant travel impacts are expected, with conditions becoming nearly impossible at times, especially on Sunday.
Precipitation Types and Totals
The storm will bring a mix of all wintry precipitation types, varying by location:
Heavy snow is expected north of I-70, with snowfall rates reaching 1-2 inches per hour at times.
Sleet will dominate along and south of I-70, including parts of northern St. Francois, Washington, and Ste. Genevieve Counties.
Freezing rain will be the primary concern south of Steelville and Farmington.
Accumulations:
Snow and Sleet:
Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, and Perry Counties: 2-6 inches
Iron and Madison Counties: 1-3 inches
Northern St. Francois, Washington, and Ste. Genevieve Counties: Higher sleet ratios may limit snow totals.
Metro St. Louis northward: A range of 5-20 inches of snow and sleet (highest amounts in Bowling Green through Quincy, Illinois).
Ice:
Southern Jefferson County to Centerville: Heaviest ice accumulations
Farmington: 0.57 inches
Centerville: 0.74 inches
Hillsboro: 0.20 inches
These ice totals, combined with wind gusts of 25-35 mph, will likely result in sporadic to widespread power outages, particularly in areas under the Ice Storm Warning.
Timing and Impacts
The storm will begin around midnight to 2 a.m. Sunday, with the heaviest accumulations occurring Sunday into Sunday night. The system is expected to exit the area between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Monday, but travel impacts will linger through Monday morning.
Roads and Surfaces: Even though ground-level ice accumulation may be slightly less than forecasted, it will still be enough to cause hazardous travel conditions.
Winds and Visibility: Northerly winds sustained at 25-35 mph will cause blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly in northern Missouri and west-central Illinois.
Temperatures: Highs on Sunday will remain below freezing, with Arctic air settling in behind the system. Low temperatures will drop into the single digits to near zero through much of the upcoming work week.
Safety Recommendations
Travel late Saturday night through Monday morning is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, ensure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle. Prepare for power outages, especially in areas with significant ice accumulations.
