Kansas City, Mo. (KFMO) - The Kansas City Chiefs survived yet another close contest Sunday, defeating AFC West foe Los Angeles 19-17 to secure its 9th straight division title.
The Chiefs led 13-0 at the half following two Matthew Wright field goals and a 9-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to DeAndre Hopkins. However, the Chargers scored twice in the third quarter, making it 14-13 Los Angeles heading into the final 15 minutes.
Another Wright field goal put the Chiefs up 16-14 with 13 minutes to play, but the Chargers again took the lead 17-16 on a nearly 9 minute drive over just 57 yards.
With 4:35 to play, Mahomes and the Chiefs offense drove into field goal range, allowing Wright to line up a 31-yard field goal to win. Wright's kick was shanked to the left and collided with the crossbar, but caught a fortunate bounce and fell through as time expired, giving the Chiefs the AFC West crown once again.
The Chiefs are 12-1 and continue their fight for the #1 seed in the AFC come playoff time. Kansas City is on the road next week, they take on the Cleveland Browns for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
