Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - The clock is ticking for Missourians who haven’t yet upgraded to a REAL ID-compliant driver license or identification card. Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or other federally approved identification will be required to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, or access certain federal facilities.
Governor Mike Kehoe is urging residents to take action now to avoid disruptions.
“Starting on May 7, 2025, a REAL ID, passport, or another approved identification will be required to fly and enter federal buildings,” said Governor Kehoe. “This is about keeping our state and country safe.”
Missouri Department of Revenue Director Trish Vincent is also encouraging residents to act now, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming deadline of May 7.
The REAL ID Act, passed after the 9/11 attacks, set new security standards for state-issued identification. Vincent explains the law’s intent.
Obtaining a REAL ID takes roughly the same time as getting a standard driver license, according to Vincent.
Missourians applying for a REAL ID will need to provide documentation proving their identity, Social Security number, legal status, proof of residency, and name change documentation if applicable.
Applications can be made at local license offices, and the fees are the same as for noncompliant licenses. Full requirements are available at dor.mo.gov.
