Missouri MAP Scores Show Modest Improvement in Several Key Subjects

Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Preliminary results from the 2025-26 Missouri Assessment Program show modest improvement in student performance in several key academic areas across Missouri.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education presented the preliminary statewide MAP results during the August meeting of the Missouri State Board of Education. The results show increases in English language arts, government, mathematics and science across both grade-level assessments and high school end-of-course assessments.

Among the most notable improvements were in sixth-grade mathematics, where proficiency increased three points to 48.9 percent.

Eighth-grade science proficiency increased more than four points to 43.9 percent.

At the high school level, English II proficiency increased more than five points to 58.4 percent, while Biology proficiency increased more than three points to 40.6 percent.

"There's more to do, but these results show upward momentum in classrooms across the state," Interim Commissioner of Education Dr. Stacey Preis said.

Preis credited students, educators and families for the progress.

MAP assessments measure how well students demonstrate their understanding of the Missouri Learning Standards.

English language arts and mathematics assessments are required annually for students in grades three through eight and once during high school. Science assessments are required once in elementary school, once in middle school and once in high school. Government is assessed at the high school level.

The results give educators and families information about student learning at the individual student, school and district levels.

The 2025-26 results remain preliminary as DESE continues its reporting process.
