Missouri State Highway Patrol Reminds Drivers to Stay Safe This Christmas

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is spreading holiday cheer with a crucial reminder: a safe Christmas is a merry Christmas. Troopers urge everyone traveling for holiday celebrations to prioritize safety by wearing seat belts, obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions, and never driving under the influence. Additionally, drivers should remember that Missouri is now a hands-free state, requiring the use of hands-free devices while operating a vehicle.

Last year, during the 78-hour Christmas holiday counting period from December 22 to December 25, 2023, there were 1,034 traffic crashes across Missouri. These incidents resulted in three fatalities and 346 injuries. For 2024, the Highway Patrol will be monitoring traffic from 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, December 25.

Corporal Dallas Thompson emphasizes that troopers will be out in full force to ensure safety on Missouri roadways.

Travelers are reminded that holiday traffic patterns will be busier, requiring extra patience and caution. The Highway Patrol offers these safety tips:

Get plenty of rest before hitting the road, even for short trips.
Check the weather and plan your route using tools like the MoDOT Traveler Information app.
Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, including winterizing it ahead of inclement weather.
In the event of a traffic emergency, motorists can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 from a mobile phone. This service connects drivers to the nearest Patrol headquarters and is available for traffic crashes, witnessing crimes, or assisting stranded motorists.

Troopers stress the importance of wearing seat belts and using child restraints to protect against hazardous drivers. They also encourage designating a sober driver if alcohol will be part of your celebrations.

Every driver can help make Missouri roadways safer by practicing responsible driving. Together, we can all contribute to a joyous and accident-free holiday season.
