Severe Weather Outbreak Expected Later Today

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - A significant severe weather outbreak is expected across the Parkland this evening, with damaging straight-line winds exceeding 80 mph and the potential for strong tornadoes.

Severe Storm Threat Details
A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms will push from west to east at speeds up to 70 mph, with storms expected to arrive between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The latest forecast data continues to suggest these storms will not remain over any single location for long, but they will pack intense wind damage, large hail, and tornado threats.

The primary hazard will be widespread destructive wind gusts over 80 mph, capable of downing trees and power lines. However, tornadoes, some possibly strong (EF2+), and hail the size of golf balls or larger are also possible.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a Moderate Risk (Level 4 out of 5) for severe weather, signaling a high likelihood of widespread hazardous conditions.

Timing and Confidence

  • Storm Arrival Window: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. (subject to slight adjustments as forecasts update)
  • Storm Speed: Up to 70 mph, meaning fast-moving storms with brief but intense impacts
  • Threat Confidence: High confidence in damaging winds, moderate-to-high confidence in tornado potential

Additional Hazards

  • Red Flag Warning: Areas in central, northeast, and west-central Missouri are under a Red Flag Warning this afternoon due to strong winds, low humidity, and dry fuels, making fire spread more likely.
  • Elevated Fire Danger: Even outside of the Red Flag Warning area, outdoor burning is discouraged due to gusty winds and dry conditions.
  • Wind Advisory: A Wind Advisory is in effect from noon Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday for the Parkland, with max wind gusts between 50-55 mph. Expect unsecured objects to be blown around, and scattered power outages are possible.

Stay Weather-Aware
Residents should prepare for severe weather by securing loose outdoor items, charging devices in case of power outages, and ensuring they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Have a safety plan in place, especially for the overnight hours.
